Kulmhof Concentration Camp was founded by Germans in the end of 1941 in the town of Chelmno, 70 kilometres northwest of Lodz. The purpose of establishing this camp was the Jews' extermination which was the part of the 'Final Solution” operation conducted by German Nazis. It was here, where poisonous gases were used for the first time in Warthegau region. Jews from nearby ghettos and villages were transported to that camp and murdered in gas chambers. The estimated number of victims is at least 150,000 and it could be even 300.000. The camp operated until January 1945 when German Nazis left the camp as the Russian Soviet troops were approaching. Only small number of prisoners survived – mainly those who had been forced to work at burying or incinerating corpses of killed inmates.
